Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market Report - Week 20

Product movement of imported fruit slows down, but domestic fruit sells well

Product movement has been less than ideal in the last week, according to traders in Guangzhou Market, because there are no traditional festivals or long holidays to stimulate fruit consumption. Moreover, many areas still struggle with recurring outbreaks of Covid-19. And the supply volume of seasonal import fruits is less abundant at the moment. Domestic fruit, however, still sells well.

Apples, oranges, grapes, and avocados are common import fruits in Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market. New Zealand and Chile still dominate the apple market. The most recent arrival is the New Zealand Sonya apple. However, according to apple importers, product movement recently slowed down. One of the reasons for this development is that market conditions are ordinary and the price is coming down, which makes buyers careful with the volumes they purchase. Meanwhile, the citrus market is dominated by South African grapefruit and Egyptian oranges. The South African grapefruit only recently entered market. The product quality is stable, but the price is much lower than last year. Their product movement slowed down as well. The price of Egyptian oranges remains stable, but their product movement slowed down too.

Most of the grapes in Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market come from Chile and Australia, with additional supply volumes from South Africa. Sales conditions seem stable. The avocados currently in the market come from Peru. Some traders noted that product movement is quite smooth at the moment. In many other avocado production areas the supply season has not yet begun, so the overall supply volume is limited. That is why the market conditions for Peruvian avocados are quite good.

Guangzhou Market also sells kiwi fruit from Chile. Although the season is still early, and the supply volume is smaller than around this time last year, traders point out that sales conditions are regular. There are also various kinds of plums, including Chilean 'ostrich eggs', which is a favorite of Guangzhou Market traders. Competition is fierce, and sales conditions are regular.

Among Southeast Asian import fruit the dragon fruit from Vietnam is popular. According to traders, the supply season lasts all year long. However, because of the pandemic and stricter procedures at customs, importers and exporters are careful to purchase only small volumes. Product movement has improved compared to last year. And white dragon fruit sells better than red dragon fruit.

There are several reasons, according to traders, first the price of lychee is rather high, so buyers are looking at dragon fruit instead. Second, Chinese dragon fruit production areas primarily produce red dragon fruit and their price is much lower than the imported red dragon fruit. The red dragon fruit from Vietnam can not compete with domestic dragon fruit, but white dragon fruit sells rather well. The price of premium white dragon fruit from Vietnam is around 190 yuan [28.93 USD] per box. Guangzhou Market also sells imported pineapples from the Philippines. Traders pointed out that the product quality is not bad, but product movement is regular, and somewhat unstable. The reason is that the price of domestic pineapples is lower, and that weakens the competitive position of imported pineapples from the Philippines.

Guangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market also sells premium domestic fruit. Some of the current best-sellers include Shandong apples and Wo mandarins from Yunnan. Product quality is quite stable too. Fragrant grapes from Yunnan recently entered the market, and most traders are selling them. There are various brands and degrees of product quality. Third-grade grapes sell for 140 yuan [20.92 USD] per box. Product movement is quite alright. Second-grade and third-grade grapes are mostly sold near Guangzhou, but first-grade and second-grade grapes end up in and around Shanghai. Yunnan blueberries are another important domestic fruit. There are many brands and degrees of product quality, and their product movement is regular.
