Potato market report week 20:

'In the ware potato range, deliveries from Italy and Cyprus increased'

There were still quite a lot of German table potatoes from the last harvest. Meanwhile, individual varieties lost in importance. French offers supplemented the sales, which were slow and saw no price changes. In the field of ware potatoes, deliveries from Italy and Cyprus increased. However, the rather high-priced product in relation to the domestic products did not always generate sufficient demand. Distributors were not always able to avoid discounts. Italian articles in particular were affected by reductions in some places.

Rhineland-Palatinate: Prices firm essentially
According to the Chamber of Agriculture of Rhineland-Palatinate, the food retail industry is pushing the changeover to early imported goods. In addition to early potatoes from Egypt and Israel, Spanish early potatoes are now also appearing in the product range. Before the end of the season, old stocks are offered again, at special prices or completely discontinued in some places. The warehouses have also been cleared in farm-gate sales. The first loose-skinned "Pfälzer Frühe" could be available from the farm and at weekly markets this weekend. Prices are essentially firm.

Hesse: Increasing number of imports on food retail shelves
On the local potato market, the situation remains calm. Price levels remain stable. The marketing of alternative goods is coming to an end. Imported goods are now increasingly being offered by retailers. As a result of weak demand for asparagus, however, the potato market is lacking a stimulus. The noticeable rise in the cost of living could also further impact sales of potatoes and early potatoes in the coming weeks. Increasingly, open ground stocks in Hesse are suffering from a precipitation deficit, according to Landesbetrieb Landwirtschaft Hessen.

Lower Saxony: potato sales progressed steadily and quietly
According to the basis (grading 35 - 65, less than 8% defects, light and firm-skinned goods, loose, free collection point per 100 kg), the following prices were paid last week:

Depending on the quality, surcharges or discounts are still possible. Please note the following market information: Potato sales progressed steadily and quietly, according to Bauernverband Nordostniedersachsen e.V.

Schleswig-Holstein: Quality goods are scarce
The table potato supply from the previous harvest continues to decrease. Quality goods in particular are in short supply. However, demand from the food trade and the catering industry is also quiet. Consequently, prices are holding at the previous level. The supply of imported early produce is at a relatively low level. Somewhat declining qualities from the previous year are still being exported to Eastern Europe - if the price is right. The first German early potatoes are being harvested nationwide. Local growers are hoping for rainfall this week, the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture writes.
