Kenya: Kalonzo admonishes governor Samboja over stalled banana plant

Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of Kenya’s Wiper Democratic Movement, has hit out at Taita Taveta governor Granton Samboja, accusing him of laxity and failure to complete the much awaited banana processing plant in Taveta. The much needed processing plant was set for completion by September, 2020.

Kalonzo said the multi-million plant could have saved farmers from huge losses over exploitation by middlemen and lack of steady market. Construction of the plant, Kalonzo said, was overdue, cutting short dreams of farmers who had increased banana production ahead of its operationalization.

The Sh110 million European Union funded plant was aimed at boosting the value addition chain of banana production and food security in the arid and semi-arid areas of the county. However, its construction has stalled for the last two years over what the agriculture department said was lack of funds to operationalize it.
