94.1% of the fruits and vegetables exported by Spain are transported by truck

Road transport is undoubtedly the primary means by which Spanish fruits and vegetables reach their export destinations.

94.1% of all exports in 2021 were transported by trucks. Specifically, the country exported 12.6 million tons by truck, 5.4 million tons of vegetables, and 7.2 million tons of fruits. According to FEPEX, the Spanish fruit and vegetable sector continues to rely mainly on trucks to export their products because of their cost, speed, adaptability to their production and marketing needs, and because their main destination markets such as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, are all in Europe.

5.5% of Spanish exports were exported by boat. In 2021, Spain exported a total of 738,986 tons of fruits and vegetables by sea (327,742 tons of vegetables and 411,244 tons of fruits).

That same year, the country exported 26,003 tons of products by train (13,520 tons of vegetables and 12,483 tons of fruits), i.e., 0.19% of the total.

12,122 tons or 0.09% of Spanish exports were shipped by plane to distant destinations, such as Canada or the Middle East.

The remaining 0.03% of the total, which amounted to 3,554 tons, was exported by mail, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise processed by FEPEX.
