Gilles Lagache, Terragaïa:

“Zespri kiwis still have great potential to grow on the French market”

Three weeks ago, the import company Terragaïa started the campaign of the Zespri SunGold kiwi. The sales of this product have been growing steadily for some years on the French market. “Zespri SunGold kiwis are a ‘true good product’,” explains Gilles Lagache, general director of Terragaïa. “The fruit is very popular among consumers, thanks to its constant quality.”

Quality as a signature
For more than 40 years, the company has been growing with the brand, which initially concerned only the Green kiwi. “We have lived through the entire evolution of Zespri, which has been organized and structured into a nice success story. It all started with the New-Zealand Kiwifruit Marketing Board which, after seeing the success of New-Zealand kiwis on the export market, decided to give them a name. The Zespri brand was created, with quality as its signature.

Consumers should have the same pleasure eating a Zespri kiwi, no matter when in the season it is consumed. New-Zealanders work hard to provide a product of consistent taste quality, while respecting their land, a value which is deeply embedded in the Maori and New-Zealand culture. They have this image of a nourishing land that must be protected, which goes far beyond any marketing goal. Zespri was created in the continuity of these values and brought structure to the sector. New-Zealanders have therefore succeeded in building a real partnership between the producers and the actors of the sector that goes beyond simple commercial exchanges. Working with them is a very rewarding experience.”

Growing sales volumes
Zespri kiwis are produced in New-Zealand and in Europe, so it is now possible to find some in France for 10 months a year. The goal is to have Zespri kiwis available all year round by juggling with the different origins. “Production has been growing steadily, along with the sales volumes on the French market, despite the fact that it is an imported fruit. No one wants a bad imported product, so when it is consistently tasty, there is some real demand. Consumers want Zespri kiwis, simply because they never disappoint. The product truly has great potential to grow on the French market.”
