Kolkata farmers told to release stored potatoes

Kolkata’s state agri-marketing department has issued an advisory to potato farmers for releasing substantial amounts of the tubers from cold storages to damped retail prices.  Because of the demand-supply gap, the prices of potatoes have gone through the roof.

Currently, 6.1 mln tons of potatoes are stored in 470 cold storages in Bengal. The state this year has saw a significant drop in production due to vagaries of weather. Bengal got 8 mln tons compared to 11 mln tons in 2021.
