In 2021, EU Member States purchased 1,793.43 million kilos of watermelon, i.e. 3.9% more than in 2019.
Spain is the country that sells the most watermelon to its community partners. In 2021, Spain sold 654.3 million kilos of watermelon in the EU, accounting for 36.48% of all the watermelon purchased by the EU Member States. However, according to data prepared by Hortoinfo from the Euroestacom statistical service (Icex-Eurostat), the volume of Spanish watermelons in the EU fell by 4% compared to 2019, totaling 27.3 million kilos less.
The value of the Spanish watermelon sold in the EU in 2021 has also decreased over 2019, going from 357.62 million euro to 343.05 million euros (-4.25%).
In 2021 its price stood at €0.52/kg, the same price at which Spanish watermelons were sold in the EU in 2019.
Italy is the second-largest supplier of watermelon supplied to the Member States, with 243.4 million kilos in 2021, i.e. 39.72 million kilos more (+19.5%) than in 2019. Italian watermelon export to the EU in 2021 stood at 87.47 million euro and an average price of € 0.36/kg.
Morocco was the EU's third-largest watermelon supplier n 2021 with 224.3 million kilos, i.e. 75.26 million kilos more (+50.49%) than in 2019. The value of Moroccan watermelon stood at 140.42 million euro and an average price of €0.63/kg, which is 21.15% more expensive than the Spanish product.
