Jacob Aktalan, MG Fruit:

"The sunny weather means we don't have enough melons to meet demand"

"Melon sales of all kinds are going exceptionally well," says Jacob Aktalan of MG Fruit in the Netherlands. "The overseas season has also been very reasonable with relatively high prices and few real slumps. With this brilliant weather, we need both the last overseas and Spanish melons to supply the market."

"The Spanish season isn't quite there, quality-wise. Though, the Galias from Almeria never look the best," Jacob continues. "But, there are hardly any alternatives, so there's still a good market demand because Spain doesn't yet have enough to meet it all. Also, Honduras is just about done with Galias and completely done sending Cantaloupe melons."

"The seedless melons are especially well-priced. In the Netherlands, watermelons sell for around €1.40 or €1.50/kg," explains Jacob. "Piel-de-Sapo and yellow melons prices are quickly reaching €20, and Spanish Galias are now fetching between €9 and €10."

"It could generally be another exciting season. Apparently, much less has been planted than last year. That's easily explainable - that was a dramatic season. With all the increased energy, transportation, and packaging costs, it's not clear if large volumes have been planted. I'm curious to see how the season will develop further. However, with this weather, I don't see sales decreasing any time soon," Jacob concludes.
