US: Online grocery sales skidded in April
Inflation-cautious U.S. consumers retreated to their grocery-shopping corners in April, new monthly data from Brick Meets Click and Mercatus suggests, as grocery delivery's active user base shrank and even online/in-store pickup, the powerhouse of online grocery sales, saw average order values and volumes dip. Overall, online grocery sales in the U.S. were down 3.8% year over year in April to $8.1bln, Barrington, Illinois-based Brick Meets Click reported. Declines in order frequency and monthly active users drove a 5.8% drop in total online order volume.
Ahold Delhaize USA transitions York, Pennsylvania, warehouse to self-distribution
Continuing a shift toward self-distribution, Ahold Delhaize USA has integrated a distribution center in York, Pennsylvania, into its self-managed network. ADUSA Supply Chain, the grocery retailer’s distribution and logistics arm, said that the addition of the automated York DC - now the largest in the network - brings the total number of self-managed facilities to 22.
US: Asian grocery chain 99 Ranch Market debuts in New York
99 Ranch Market is one of the latest tenants to open its doors at the new Samanea New York mall in Westbury, formerly known as the Mall at the Source. The nearly 46,000-square-foot supermarket is said to be the largest national grocery store chain to specialize in a full range of Asian ingredients and foods. It's also the first 99 Ranch Market to open in New York.
US: UFCW 8-Golden State ratifies contracts with Save Mart Cos., Albertsons Cos.
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 8-Golden State has ratified new labor agreements for grocery workers at Safeway, Vons, Save Mart, Lucky and Food Maxx supermarkets in Northern and Central California. UFCW 8GS said the 3-year contracts with Albertsons Cos. (Safeway and Vons) and The Save Mart Cos. (Save Market, Lucky and Food Maxx) bring “substantial wage” increases and uphold current health care and pension benefits. The new collective bargaining agreements cover more than 15,500 members of UFCW 8GS as well as members of UFCW Local 5 in the San Francisco Bay Area and Local 648 in San Francisco.
US: Meta’s first store aims to lure consumers to the metaverse
Meta’s first brick-and-mortar presence is a tidy 1,500-square-foot space adjacent to its Reality Labs Headquarters in Burlingame, California, with 3 products on display on blonde wood shelves. The company formerly known as Facebook is using the space to introduce consumers to the products that will help it realize Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of the metaverse.
UK: Inside huge new Hello Fresh warehouse in Derby bringing hundreds jobs
Hello Fresh, the country's leading meal kit provider, opened its third national distribution centre in Derby. The state-of-the-art building is the first in the city's new food manufacturing hub, SmartParc in Spondon. The giant centre, which is called The Orchard, will receive fresh produce which will be packaged into personalised meal kits for customers across the UK. Hello Fresh is confident that The Orchard will create 350 jobs for people in Derby within its first few months.
Hungary: SPAR invests over €20mln in logistics
SPAR Hungary has made significant investments in its logistics network to increase efficiency. The company in 2021 invested over €8.7mln in transportation and logistics developments and will spend an additional €11.4mln in 2022.
UK: One Stop stores offer Uber Eats deliveries
Uber Eats has announced a new partnership with One Stop as the latest step in extending their deliveries for grocery and convenience stores. An initial group of 100 One Stop stores have already launched on the app, with a further 400 scheduled to be added. Products on offer range from confectionery and alcohol to fresh meats, fruit and vegetables, as well as seasonal deals and offers.
Spain: Mercadona upgrades ready-to-eat section in select outlets
Spanish retailer Mercadona has introduced a free service to its Ready-to-Eat section after a 4-month testing period in select outlets. The new sales model will be gradually implemented in the more than 800 stores that have a Ready-to-Eat section, with the aim of making it available across all stores by the end of the year.
Grocery e-commerce market grew by 15.8% last year: Kantar
E-commerce was the fastest-growing channel in the global grocery market last year, growing 15.8% on the back of a 45.9% increase the previous year, new data from Kantar has found. E-commerce now represents 7.2% of food sales, compared to 6.3% in 2020 and 4.8% in 2019, Kantar's Winning Omnichannel report showed.
Ireland: Deliveroo saw increase in orders containing avocado from 2020 to 2021
To mark Cinco de Mayo, Deliveroo has examined the avocado-eating habits of the residents of Ireland. Data from Deliveroo has revealed that the food delivery firm saw a 62% increase in orders containing avocado in Ireland from 2020 to 2021, with restaurant orders including guacamole, avocado on toast, avocado salads and avocado in smoothies, as well as grocery orders containing avocados from Deliveroo grocery partners such as Mace and Spar. According to Deliveroo, the people of Knocknacarra in Galway, and Templeogue in Dublin, purchase - on average - the equivalent of 3 avocados with each order, which is 1 more avocado than anywhere else in Ireland. According to Deliveroo, orders containing avocado peak at 1pm, which suggests that the residents of Ireland prefer eating avocado at lunchtime.

Supie, New Zealand’s online supermarket, has thrown its support behind Consumer NZ’s new petition calling for fairer supermarket prices. Consumer NZ started the petition "Stop the Super Profits", calling on the Government to put ordinary people first - saying supermarkets' excess profits are a "slap in the face" to Kiwis struggling to put food on the table. Supie founder Sarah Balle says it’s been well known for some time the huge profits the duopoly is making and something has to be done.
Iceland Ireland launches online shopping service
Iceland Ireland announced the launch of its new online shopping service across a selection of their stores nationwide. The grocer outlined that its Iceland can now avail of this new service with almost 3,000 products available online. In addition to frozen foods Iceland Ireland also offers customers the 'very best' in fresh produce as well as hundreds of local Irish brands.
