Lamboseeds presents Dolce Passione

Italian seedless watermelon with a black rind

Dolce Passione is the premium seedless watermelon with a black rind and a red flesh. It was officially presented at Macfrut on May 5th 2022, but market tests were carried out last year.

It is the fruit of team work that has seen Lamboseeds dealing with experiments and advanced research for 7 years, working with producers and traders such as Alma Seges (Eboli, Salerno) and Ortofrutta Castello (Stanghella, Padua) as well.

"The result is a watermelon with a shiny uniform black rind, a crunchy red flesh, sugary flavor (Brix level above 12, definitely livelier than usual) and rich in fiber also thanks to the absence of seeds. Production is of around 4,000 tons during this first phase and is located in various parts of Italy (from Sicily to Lombardy) covering a total area of around 100 hectares," explains Sandro Colombi from Lamboseeds.

Its most distinct characteristic is the sweetness of the flesh, with a constant Brix level throughout the production period. Analyzing the production situation in Italy, Colombi reports that "Italy produces less than 0.5% of the global watermelon production and occupies the 20th position among the main producers. In this situation, high-quality productions are needed to withstand the fierce competition of Spain and Greece. Companies that will exclusively commercialize this fruit sell whole fruits with a weight that varies between 3.5 and 6 kg. To facilitate sales, Dolce Passione will also be available in nets."

The leading global watermelon producer is China, followed by Iran, Russia, India and Turkey. According to the latest data, Italy produces around 539 thousand watermelons on approximately 16,000 hectares. The leading producer regions are Lazio, Apulia, Sicily, Lombardy, Campania and Emilia-Romagna.
