"Now that the trees have fully blossomed and the fruit set under good conditions, the pears are slowly forming. The weather conditions are still favorable, and the forecast looks good too. If things continue as such, it looks promising for this season's harvest," says Joop Vernooij of Frupaks-Vernooij, part of Staay Food Group.
First commercial crop
This will be the first Red Conference pear commercial crop. In the Netherlands, the Staay Food Group, and in Belgium, the BFV got the exclusive marketing rights for this new club variety in 2018. Since then, considerable investments have been made in tree propagation and acreage expansion. The first small commercial harvest was planned for last year, but the cold spring weather complicated matters. The first Red Conference should, thus, be brought on the market this year.
Good storability; year-round availability
The past years' harvests were used to test this pear's storability. "As expected and hoped, this is just as good as that of regular Conference pears. That makes the Red Conference the only red pear you can sell all year round," concludes Joop.
