The hail and tornado in Murcia this week caused €16 million in damages. Orchards growing apricots, lemons, peaches, almonds and nectarines in Murcia have been badly affected by the weather.
Minister for Agriculture of the Region of Murcia, Antonio Luengo, stated that the most affected regions are Rio Mula, the Altiplano and the northwestern part of Murcia, while the most damaged crops are apricots, lemons, peaches, almonds and nectarines. In addition, there has been damage to trees, "which will affect future harvests".
The regional government has already promised farmers that they will cover the costs of any phytosanitary treatments that they have to carry out to recover their plantations. For now, however, the Region will lose some of its projected economic income, and it is likely that fruit will become more expensive in supermarkets for end consumers, even as most produce is becoming more costly anyway.
