"With a delay of about fifteen days, the melon campaign of the Mundial Group Consortium has started last week. As is known to the operators of the sector, it includes the exclusive use of the variety Red Falcon and not only," said Domenico Raneri, president of the commercial association which includes 8 members, and whose cultivations are concentrated in the areas of Licata (AG), Palma di Montechiaro (Ag) and Pachino (Sr), along the southern coast of Sicily.
"The first harvests are promising and confirm the perfect state of our crops. The setting of our varieties is excellent, and they have not been affected by the cold waves of the past weeks. This slight delay that makes us one of the first to arrive on the market with a European product, healthy and safe, has proved to be an advantage, since the fruits have had more time to assimilate the sugar. Our Red Falcon never goes below 14 degrees Brix, and this year it will confirm and exceed the standards during the rest of the season," continued Raneri.
Consorzio Mundial is a private registered trademark, which promotes a particular type of cantaloupe, with an intense orange flesh color. It is the already mentioned variety Red Falcon F1, which has made the history of the Consortium, to which the early variety Saetta F1 and Red Lion F1 have been added for some time. The latter variety (medium-late) has registered a certain increase in transplants, in order to test its behavior against the most common phytopathologies, such as powdery mildew and others.
The varieties cultivated exclusively by the Consortium Mundial Group are all of high taste, that is, they have that extra something that interprets the authentic 100% Italian gastronomic tradition. This added value has continued to represent the best of a consolidated supply chain for 16 years.

The member companies of the Consortium are: Chiaramonte, Fruttomania and La Nuova Falconara srl, Cooperativa San Tommaso, MasterFruit, OrtoBig, Salfrutta and Società Agricola Semplice G.R.A.L., as well as Fonteverde.
"Our product is very popular in the fruit and vegetable market. It is recognizable and appreciated by a group of consumers who are particularly careful to superior taste, as well as to health and sustainability aspects. This year's production is estimated to be in line with that of previous years,” said the president Raneri.
"As a Consortium, our aim is to ensure very high-quality standards of a product in line with a high taste cantaloupe, unique, healthy and ethical at every stage of the process."
The area cultivated by the Consortium is about 800 hectares; the Mundial melon mainly reaches the national market, that is northern Italy. On the contrary, modest quantities of product are commercialized abroad.
