Banana prices increased by 55% in the last year

Prices are not the same as they were a year ago, the annual inflation figure rose to 9.8% in March. Electricity and fuel have experienced the most marked rises, but the increase in prices is noticeable at all levels; including the shopping basket.

In fact, in the last twelve months the banana has gone from costing 1.2 euro per kilo to 1.86 euro at present, i.e. 55% more, according to the last update of the Mercasa price panel in the main Spanish wholesale markets, collected by Servimedia.

Bananas had the highest increase but they are not the only food product to experience an increase in prices. Other fruits and vegetables that have experienced price increases of more than 30% in the last year are lemons (36%), lettuce (35%), onions (32%), and potatoes (31%), which are sold at 0.76 euro per kilo.

Medlar prices have increased by 21% and tomatoes are 20% more expensive.

Despite this context, the price of some food products has decreased. However, the proportion of products and the decreases are lower. Strawberry prices have fallen by 15%, apple prices by 12%, and oranges cost 11% less in wholesale markets. In the last year, avocado prices have decreased by 9%.
