‘Shoprite is ignoring locally produced onions’

The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has stated it is saddened that Shoprite Zambia is currently facing onion shortages in its stores when the country has an oversupply of the produce from both small-scale and large-scale producers. ZNFU Public Relations Manager Kakoma Kaleyi says the statement attributed to Shoprite of the alleged countrywide shortage of onion is not only misleading but also unfortunate.

In a statement, Kaleyi says data reveals that there was over importation of the produce between January and March 2022 thereby disadvantaging local suppliers. He said the country is currently awash with onions from both small and large scale farmers.
