The internal processes behind the Varietal Reliability label

'System seeks to offer its customers maximum security when purchasing plant material'

Viveros Hernandorena presented few months ago its seal of Varietal Reliability, its own certification that endorses its work methodology under three concepts: Varietal Authenticity; Varietal Adaptability; and Plant Health.

A new working system which it seeks to offer its customers maximum security when purchasing plant material. "To achieve this, it has been necessary to set up a series of highly technical and specialised internal processes, always seeking to ensure that our seal of Varietal Reliability transmits confidence and security to customers on the basis of meticulous work in the nursery," explains Rosa Hernandorena, commercial director of Viveros Hernandorena.

Varietal Authenticity
In order to guarantee Varietal Authenticity,  Viveros Hernandorena has increased its mother plant field surface area, with the aim of ensuring that all the material used for grafting is its own. DNA analysis is also carried out on the buds of the new varieties that arrive in the mother plant field.

In addition, once the plant has been produced, during the flowering period, the flowers are inspected to determine that they correspond to the flower typology and morphology of each variety.

"All this work linked to plant material is carried out by highly specialised personnel, as it is one of the most delicate jobs in the nursery, where the whole process begins", says Rosa Hernandorena, commercial director of  Viveros Hernandorena, adding that they are professionals who are very aware of the importance of their work.

Varietal Adaptability
In addition to the mother plant field,  Viveros Hernandorena has an experimental field, a research and agronomic reference point for breeders, where they can test the development of the different varieties and show customers how they perform. "This is a very important phase because we have to guarantee our growers that the new varieties, the ones they are going to take, adapt to their needs", adds the sales manager.

Viveros Hernandorena is preparing a catalogue of reference plots for customers, in order to continue the training process for its technicians on these new varieties and to be able to transfer this knowledge on their adaptation and behaviour to customers.

Plant Health
Plant Health is important as Varietal Authenticity and Adaptability. For its control,  Viveros Hernandorena  has a technical department which, in addition to plant production and R&D work, implements plant health for control tasks.

This work is currently focused on integrated pest control and is moving towards biological control. "We are in a moment of transition, as biological control is complicated inside the nursery, due to its microclimate and the high rotation of plants. It also requires a high level of training", describes Rosa Hernandorena.

With this integrated pest control,  Viveros Hernandorena guarantees plant health through plant labelling, a unitary label that not only ensures traceability and varietal authenticity, but also includes the plant passport, the maximum certification for plant export, endorsed and granted by the competent administrations. "We have been pioneers in the labelling of fruit plants for agriculture", Rosa Hernandorena, commercial director of  Viveros Hernandorena.

Almond Plant
Currently,  Viveros Hernandorena finalizing its almond plant stock for next month in May. A very well-formed plant and excellent quality, with a wide varietal range to meet the demands and needs of its customers in the different agricultural projects that are being developed.

Events
Viveros Hernandorena   will be in  FIMA 2022 (Zaragoza, from April 26 to 31), where it will stay with its own stand and we will be able to learn more about its Varietal Reliability seal.
