Solutions to reduce food waste in stone fruit production

Stone fruit is widely cultivated in Spain. In 2020, the country harvested a total of 1.6 million kilos of stone fruits. This fruit group is sensitive to exogenous factors that can limit both its post-harvest life and the quality of the fruit.

Usually, pathogenic fungi cause the greatest losses in stone fruit. The Monilinia spp., the most important post-harvest disease in stone fruit, and the Rhizopus spp cause the greatest losses in the Spanish market.

Other relevant pathogens in stone fruit are Penicillium spp. Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea...

In addition to pathogens, the agri-food chain subjects the fruit to stress during the post-harvest period, limiting its useful life. The fruit's firmness and skin are affected by the blows, abrasions, changes in temperature, and different humidities, it experiences in the field, during its development, and in the packing facilities.

To minimize these challenges that jeopardize the viability of the commercialization of stone fruit trees, causing the known losses of food, DECCO Ibérica has worked to bring to the market different solutions that facilitate the operation of the warehouse so they can market as much fruit as possible.

"To deal with pathogenic fungi, DECCO Ibérica has launched the first and only registered solution against the pathogens that affect stone fruit the most: DECCOpyr 400 SC, a liquid solution based on pyrimethanil, a molecule with a low toxicological profile that has demonstrated great effectiveness against the pathogens that affect stone fruit in post-harvest the most."

"We at DECCO developed the only fumigant solution for stone fruit, DECCOpyr Pot to complement the use of DECCOpyr online. It's an effective and easy-to-use solution that is applied in the cameras."

"Stone fruit has a high water component that makes it susceptible to fungal attack, so it is necessary to complement these fungicidal solutions with enhancers that complement pyrimethanil's antifungal action. DECCO has developed and adapted the use of DECCOsan FH for the sanitization of the fruit, as well as the water from the raft."

"DECCOsan is a powerful oxidant with fungistatic properties, whose double method of action sanitizes the water, the surface of the fruit, and complements DECCOpyr."

"However, these treatments do not cover 100% of the fruit and vegetable processing. That's why DECCO has signed a strategic agreement with the SevenOx company for the installation of its equipment in the horticultural plants that allow us purifying the environment 24/7."
