Yellow watermelons boost Panamanian exports to Europe and the US

The Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) said that Panama's watermelon exports to Europe and the US were increasing as the Potuga Fruit Company and Agro export Pacific companies will export more than 500 containers of this product to these destinations.

The Potuga Fruit Company, based in Potuga, is dedicated to the production of special watermelons for the British and European market, including yellow watermelons, a seedless ultra-firm variety that has no liquid and is three times harder than normal watermelon, stated Carlos Campo, manager and owner of the company.

The company manages plantations in the Tabasara area, between Veraguas and Chiriqui. It has a staff of nearly 400 workers on its farms and plant, which allows them to generate a social benefit for the community and the economy.

Tomas Solis, the director of MIDA's Agribusiness, said the Potuga Fruit company, which has already exported nearly 200 containers this season, expected to export more than 300 containers in this export season.

In turn, Agro Export Pacific has exported 140 containers so far and expects to close the season with 200 containers. This phase began in February and ends at the end of April.

Both companies are entering the European and North American markets, which are starting to grow because of these products' top quality.
