The frost of the last days could have wiped out the production of asparagus in the province of Guadalajara, as it coincided with the moment when the tips were already sprouting, as Asaja confirmed after a first evaluation.
The APAG also confirmed the catastrophic nature of the situation, as producers lost everything that was ready to be harvested. "There won't be any asparagus for a week," a spokesman stated.
Last year, the harvest began on March 18. In 2022, it is at least 20 days delayed so far. This is a severe setback for producers, who lost their best production month and best prices.
According to an assessment by the APAG, producers have lost 80 to 100 kilos of asparagus per hectare for each day of frost. So far, there have been 4 days of frosts.
The frosts have also seriously affected almond crops, with losses estimated at more than three-quarters of production within Castilla-La Mancha.
