Dept of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development used drones to monitor citrus pests

Employees of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development (Seapdr) are using drones for the first time in field work, during the inspection of citrus orchards in the municipalities of Constantina, Liberato Salzano and Iraí, in the Palmeira das Missões region.

The use of the tool made it possible to identify areas where the orchards had different colors, indicating chlorosis caused by some disease or environmental cause, such as drought. After taking aerial images, the suspicious plants were inspected and also randomly in all orchards. Thirty commercial orchards were inspected for the presence of pests such as citrus canker, the vector of the Greening disease and the citrus black fly.

Agronomist Rita Antochevis, head of the Health Defense Division. Vegetable (DDSV) from Seapdr: “Carrying out official phytosanitary surveys is essential for maintaining the system of phytosanitary certification of origin of citrus fruits from these gaucho producers of lemons, acid limes, oranges and bergamots.”
