In week 9, the Stuttgart-based company Kärcher & Co began selling German spring onions and will continue to have them in its range until October/November. "However, due to freight costs, the spring onions are being sold at the wholesale market by 0.05 euros more per bunch. However, it is also to be expected that prices will have to be raised again," says Purchasing and Sales Manager Kai Horwath.

The quality of the spring onions is currently very good and the product is very stable. The onions are primarily marketed to various restaurants in the Stuttgart area. Kärcher obtains the goods from a large producer in Baden-Württemberg and can sell between 600-800 crates per week with 6000-8000 spring onions per crate. Still, prices for the onions would be comparable to last year's. "Demand is good, with continued strong interest in Italian produce," Horwath notes. In addition to the vegetables from Italy and Germany, however, Kärcher also sells colorful lettuces from France, where sales have also been good, he says.
Due to the aftermath of the Russian attack on Ukraine, harvest workers from Ukraine will not be in attendance this year. "Other harvest workers are coming from Romania, but they also do not dare to leave at the moment. This could present us with major problems, in particular for the strawberry harvest. Overall, it will be a difficult year, especially since fuel and other prices are far too high. Just about everything has become more expensive in Germany."
