Mexico: Avocado season kicks off with exports to Canada and Spain

Mexico's Hass avocado export season started with the shipping of two 20-ton shipments of Hass avocados, produced in the State of Mexico, (one of the country's top three producers), to Spain and Canada, which shows how the fruit has diversified its markets.

The secretary of Agricultural Development, Heriberto Ramirez Ortega, said that the orchards of the producers from the State of Mexico making exports were certified as free of screwworms. This allows them to export their crops to other countries, as they meet the required quality standards.

He stressed that this achievement was the result of coordinated efforts by the state government, farmers, and municipalities through the Secretariat of Agricultural Development (SEDAGRO). Producers benefited from training, technical assistance, the establishment of demonstration plots, and a comprehensive management plan that includes the use of natural fertilizers and phytosanitary campaigns.

Mexico exports Hass avocado to 34 countries. The US is their main market and the production volume has increased since 2010. The main producing states are, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacan, the State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatan, Guerrero and Puebla.
