In 2021, Almeria, Murcia, and Valencia accounted for 61% of all Spanish fruit and vegetable exports, which amounted to 13.4 million tons. Specifically, Almeria accounted for 21% with 2.9 million tons, followed very closely by Murcia with 20% of the total (2.7 million), and Valencia with 18% (2.4 million tons).
The three provinces increased their export volume over 2020; Almeria by 1%, Murcia by 5%, and Valencia by 3%.
Almeria exported the largest volumes of peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes, while Murcia exported the largest volumes of lettuce and cabbages.
Spanish pepper exports in 2021 amounted to 853,582 tons, 584,418 tons of which came from Almería and 123,200 tons from Murcia. The country sold 811,704 tons of lettuce, 542,270 tons of which came from Murcia and 153,402 from Almeria.
Tomato shipments amounted to 662,487 tons. 385,009 tons came from Almeria, 85,828 tons from Murcia, and 64,866 tons from Granada. Spain exported 660,311 tons of cucumbers, 477,789 tons of which came from Almeria and 63,256 tons from Granada.
Cabbages exports amounted to 539,290 tons. Murcia shipped 334,761 tons, followed by distance from Alicante with 46,024 tons.
Fruit exports were led by citrus fruits, with Valencia as the first exporter, followed by watermelon, melon, peach, nectarine, and strawberry exports.
Citrus exports in 2021 stood at 3.7 million tons. 1.1 million tons came from Valencia, 733,143 tons from Castellon, 564,601 tons from Murcia, and 232,796 tons from Alicante.
Watermelon exports amounted to 996,617 tons, 494,494 tons of which came from Almeria, 240,530 from Murcia, and 107,701 tons from Valencia. Spain exported 430,763 tons of melon. 208,660 tons came from Murcia, 92,395 tons from Almeria, 30,252 tons from Valencia, 27,502 from Alicante, and 20,121 tons from Ciudad Real.
Spain exported 356,664 tons of nectarine. The main nectarine exporting provinces were Lerida with 93,352 tons, Murcia with 58,355 tons, Huesca with 40,609 tons, Valencia with 32,019 tons, and Badajoz with 30,023 tons.
Peach exports amounted to 344,271 tons. The largest volumes came from Lleida with 110,404 tons, Murcia with 65,951 tons, Valencia with 39,262 tons, and Huesca with 37,822 tons.
Finally, Spain exported 316,556 tons of strawberries. Huelva accounted for 246,896 tons, i.e. 78% of the total, and was followed by Valencia, with 33,188 tons.
