Greenhouse acreage dropped by 2 hectares compared with year before

According to the Thuringian State Office for Statistics, some 10,900 tons of vegetables were harvested in Thuringia's greenhouses in 2021. This corresponded to a decrease of 450 tons -or 4 percent- as compared to 2020. The area under cultivation in Thuringia's greenhouses dropped by 2 hectares or 5 percent compared to the previous year and totaled 32 hectares.

The majority of Thuringia's greenhouse area (88 percent) was used to grow tomatoes. At 28 hectares, the area under cultivation was 3 hectares or 11 percent higher than in 2020. The harvest totaled around 10,400 tons. This was 300 tons or 3 percent more than the year before. The yield per hectare achieved was 368 tons, which was 28 tons per hectare, or 7 percent, below the previous year's figure.

Cucumbers were grown on just over 1 hectare of the total greenhouse area. A yield of 98 tons per hectare was recorded. This was 17 tons per hectare or 15 percent below the previous year's result. A total of 110 tons of cucumbers were harvested in Thuringian greenhouses. The total harvest volume was more than a quarter less than in 2020 (-38 metric tons or -26 percent).
