Honduras increases production and export of greenhouse peppers

Honduras has the largest chili production area under a protected environment in Central America, with 35 hectares planted with colored chili of the bell peppers variety in the department of Choluteca under the administration of the company Agro Alpha.

8 to 10 containers of colored chili peppers produced in the company's greenhouses located in the municipality of San Marcos de Colon, in the southern part of Honduras, are shipped each week to the United States market.

In November 2021, the company sent its first container to the North American country, where it has positioned itself, currently managing to export 638 thousand kilograms in its first phase and generate foreign currency for the country.

This achievement was also possible thanks to the technical support it has received from the National Service for Agrifood Health and Safety (SENASA), stated Ivan Martinez, the coordinator of the National Export Certification Unit at the Agricultural Quarantine Technical Directorate.

"We've been able to achieve these results because once we began monitoring for fruit flies in August 2020, a requirement established in the Export Protocol, we discovered we had a low prevalence of fruit flies," he said.
