After consolidating itself in Europe and arriving with fruit in the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Japan, among others, the largest Hass avocado exporter from Colombia, Westfalia Fruit, which produced more than 9,364 tons of this fruit in 2021, is very interested in entering the Chilean market with its avocado.
“We have a subsidiary in the group that's been in the market for more than 40 years and that would allow us to guarantee the supply to several clients. Chile is a country with a high per capita consumption and purchasing power. In addition, transporting the fruit to this destination only takes seven to nine days, and they consume the calibers that are easily produced in Colombia. That is a very good option in the cross season,” stated the company's general manager, Pedro Aguilar.
Westfalia Fruit Colombia is part of Westfalia Fruit International, a company with several decades of experience producing, processing, and exporting fresh fruit, particularly avocado. The company has generously shared its know-how with its chapter in Colombia, which has allowed to spread that knowledge throughout the country's subsector, they added.
“We aim to take only the best producers, who can guarantee excellent quality fruit, guided by the parameters of our technical team. The most important thing is to be consistent, harvest the fruit with the appropriate dry matter, and comply with the work ethics certifications to ensure that the fruit meets all the requirements and good agricultural practices, respecting our employees and the environment," said the commercial manager of Westfalia Fruit Colombia, Juliana Florez.
In 2014, the company invested in its own farms in Sonson, Antioquia, from where they have aimed to consolidate knowledge in Hass cultivation. Currently, Westfalia Farms Colombia has 500 hectares of Hass avocado in production and development and more than 1,500 hectares of its allied producers.
