"Production volume and price of Hami melons both go up as Chinese Spring Festival approaches"

Chinese Spring Festival [1 February, 2022] is almost upon us and market demand for fruit is growing. The seasonal craze for import fruit offers stiff competition to Chinese Hami melons in the domestic market. Ms. Wang of Shenzhen Xiyu Huaguoshan Agricultural Product Development Co., Ltd. recently talked about conditions in Hami production areas and markets.

Manager Wang first introduced conditions in production areas. "The Hami melons currently on the market mostly come from Hainan. The first harvest of Hami melons from Hainan was not ideal this year. Weather conditions were not favorable. Production areas suffered excessive rainfall between September and October. So the first harvest struggled with insect pests and that reduced the production volume as well as the product quality. The flavor was not great. In addition, some of the larger greenhouses ran out of stock before the next harvest was ready."

"The Hami melon production season in Hainan begins in October and lasts until June in the subsequent year. The seedlings for the second harvest are already transplanted and pollinated. In some production areas the second harvest has already begun. These Hami melons are expected to enter the market in large volumes in early February. The weather conditions in production areas were much better in the last few months, so the production volume and product quality of the next harvest are expected to have improved much compared to the first harvest."

Chinese Spring Festival [1 February, 2022] is fast approaching. Market demand has grown stronger. "The purchase price in production areas increased by 50% compared to ten days ago because market demand has grown stronger. Both the production volume and the price increased, but on the retail end, prices have not increased because of the impact of the pandemic and general economic crisis," said manager Wang.

When asked about market trends in the near future, manager Wang replied, "when product movement is not quick enough, the price will fall again. However, we have our own brand and steady demand from loyal clients, so our sales figures are not affected."

The Hami melon market has difficulty recovering to pre-pandemic levels. Although the market price of Hami melons is much lower than several years ago, that also has an impact on the sales conditions of other fruits. Moreover, the arrival of import fruits such as cherries and blueberries has an impact on the sales conditions of premium domestic fruits. When the prices are similar, Chinese consumers often choose to buy import fruits.

Domestic brands are working hard to improve their image. Korla Xiyu Huaguoshan Specialized Agricultural Cooperation is currently looking to make a breakthrough. "We improved the packaging of our products. We hope to improve the image of our brand and give our clients a new vision. Our new products have been on the market for a short time, but we already received great feedback."
