France: 2022 truffle season promises to be exceptional in the Périgord

The 2022 truffle season promises to be historic in the Périgord. After several disappointing years, the truffle growers of the Dordogne department are looking forward to an exceptional year in terms of both quality and quantity.

“We had the exact amount of water needed this summer, then the autumn season was perfectly balanced and finally, the intense cold of the past few days with temperatures going below 5°C has been ideal for the growth of the truffles,” explains Édouard Aynaud, truffle grower.

High demand
“All the professionals, especially restaurants, know that the quality is really good this year. They are all ordering truffles at the same time, but we’re not always able to perfectly meet their demand yet.”

Prices vary from 800 to 1,000 euros/kg [908 to 1,135 USD/kg]
“These figures can seem astronomical but the quantities purchased by our clients are small. For just 25 euros [28.4 USD], you can buy a nice truffle the size of a ping-pong ball. That’s completely affordable for an exceptional product which is consumed in small quantities. Contrary to popular thinking, truffles are not reserved just for the elite! It is completely false. Come to our markets to see for yourselves!”
