It can supply the market in this Spring Festival

The trial planting of "Old Beijing" green chives succeeded

After nearly a year of efforts by the technical personnel of the Beijing Municipal Agricultural Technology Extension Station, the "old Beijing" green chive, which has been extinct for nearly half a century, has been successfully replanted in Daxing District. This is another variety of the old flavors in Beijing that resumed planting after walnut-patterned cabbage and heart-to-heart radish. Up to now, Beijing has resumed planting more than 10 kinds of old vegetables, of which 6 can be supplied to the market before the Spring Festival.

In the minds of old Beijingers, green chive is a high-end dish on the winter market, and its price far exceeds that of pork. It belongs to the proper "best products" on the vegetable market. "Green chive is actually about a kind of cultivation process by selecting 'Haijiu No. 6' and other spicy varieties. Planting from last April and growing till the winter of that year, we get the root of the chives from the ground and store them under open-air shelter for about 10 days to break their dormancy. They are then washed and transferred to the greenhouse for dense hydroponics planting without light. By doing this, the green chives are more fragrant, and their leaves are extremely tender. We can also keep them clean and have zero pesticide residue. This variety is the perfect aromatic product for making dumplings," said Lei Xihong, a senior agronomist at the Beijing Agricultural Technology Extension Station.

In the spring of 2021, the Beijing Agricultural Technology Extension Station began to try to plant "old Beijing" green chives in the Tianyuan Xinsheng Vegetable Park in Lixian and succeeded after continuous exploration. Xin Shulin, the person in charge of the park, said that the green chives in the park are growing happily, but the planting area is only half a mu. It is still in the stage of resuming planting, and the production from 3 harvests is expected to be about 1,000 kg.
