Relocation enters the final round

"Cologne wholesale market will be sacrificed to misguided urban housing and transport policies"

The wholesale market will remain in Cologne-Raderthal until the end of 2025 - after which the retailers will move to the new Frischezentrum in Marsdorf. "For the new Frischezentrum, a municipal plot of land is available at the Frechen junction of the A1 autobahn. The site is approximately 17.6 hectares in size. Of this, circa 16.7 hectares can be used for the Frischezentrum," says the city of Cologne. Products such as fruit, vegetables, poultry, fish, food and luxury foods or, for example, packaged goods will then continue to be offered on site.

"This day will go down as the blackest day in the history of the Cologne wholesale market. The wholesale market is ultimately sacrificed to a misguided urban housing and transport policy, so that some real estate owners and well-connected investors in Cologne can further annex parts of the city," said Michael Rieke, Chairman of the Board of Interessengemeinschaft Kölner Großmarkt, on the decision.

According to Rieke, in Marsdorf it is property owners in the Lindenthal district and at the current location it is Parkstadt Süd who are waiting for the lucrative plots. "A tramway that will still very many years later only shuttle between a few stations without connection to the rest of the network is only realized now because of access to federal funding. But this results in idiotic construction measures, such as relocating a street crossing 50 meters to the north, with the consequence that the main access to the Cologne wholesale market will be permanently closed, without any consideration for the traffic of the wholesale market."
