Daniel Badger - VitaFresh

“By investing in the farm, we have more control of how things are done"

UK importer VitaFresh has recently invested in a farm in Honduras growing sweet potatoes to complement their imports from the US.

“By investing in the farm, we have more control of how things are done and it also shortens the supply chain, keeping things simple. Our customers want to buy direct from the grower,” said Daniel Badger Managing Director at VitaFresh. “The farm grows 120 hectares of sweet potatoes at the moment and there is scope for expansion. We are also planning to plant lime trees on the farm to have our own supply. At the moment the farm grows plantains, cassava and a few varieties of squashes which are exported.”

The farm has been in production for a couple of years, but the import of the sweet potatoes into the UK is just starting now.

“Honduras can produce sweet potatoes year-round but it’s not viable to import them into the UK from July to November when there are big volumes available from Egypt. We have done a few trial containers of sweet potatoes and are looking forward to the main arrivals in 6-8 weeks, we hope to import around 50 containers.”
