The Casablanca wholesale fruits and vegetables market has set a new high in terms of tonnage in 2021; it is projected at 1,500,000 kg. It seems the market's revenue has surpassed last year's mark of MAD 150 million ($16.30 million), the second greatest performance since its inauguration in 1986.
The market achieved this success despite the pandemic, which has had a substantial impact on demand in critical sectors for the activity, such as the hotel and restaurant industries. In the midst of Morocco’s epidemic, the market, which attracts nearly half of the volume of commodities passing through wholesale marketplaces in Morocco, has adapted to this market reality to assure a normal and consistent supply of fruit and vegetables.
The wholesale market for fruits and vegetables, which spans 26 hectares, sees between 600 and 1000 trucks and 30,000 to 60,000 visitors each day. According to the Moroccan National Union of Associations of Wholesale Markets of Vegetables and Fruits, the industry earns more than MAD 350 million ($38.05 million) annually.
