Since New Year's Day 2022, many types of fruit and vegetables in France may only be sold without plastic packaging. The ban is intended to save more than one billion pieces of plastic packaging per year. "All we can say about this legal regulation is: Merci, la France!" says Jan Hanenkamp, managing director of mechanical engineering company Project Service & Produktion from Kranenburg in Germany.
He also appeals to producers for fruit and vegetables outside of France to rethink things without focusing on legal obligations but proactively focusing on environmentally friendly solutions. "For organic products in particular -but not exclusively- consumers look closely at the packaging. He rightly wonders why paper is not used instead of plastic."
PROGREEN paper banderoles from Project S&P are 100% recyclable.
Good solutions have been available for this for some time, he says: "At Project S&P, we offer PROGREEN, a paper banderole that can be 100% recycled. Our customers use it in the easy-to-operate PROBAND V banding machine," says André Vois, Product Key Account Manager for the PROBAND V and PROGREEN.
Product credibility
His managing director Jan Hanenkamp assumes that sooner or later the EU will follow France's lead, resulting in an increasing ban on plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables throughout the EU. "We recommend companies, therefore, not to wait until legislation is announced, but to think ecologically now. More so because this also pays into the credibility of organic products."
