Dutch retailer Jan Linders Supermarkets said that it managed to 'maintain a high turnover level' throughout what the group described as an 'eventful year' in 2021. With the focus on maintaining a safe shopping environment for consumers to do their daily shopping, a turnover of €512mln was achieved in 2021, the group said.

UK: Tesco upgrades profit outlook on stronger than expected Christmas
Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, raised its profit outlook for the 2nd time in 4 months as it reported a rise in Christmas sales despite a tough comparative with 2020 when spending was boosted by a COVID-19 lockdown. The group said UK like-for-like sales rose 0.2% year-on-year in its 3rd quarter to November 27 and were up 0.3% over the 6 weeks to January 8. As a result of stronger than expected sales to date Tesco now expects a full-year 2021-22 retail operating "slightly above" the top-end of its previous 2.5-2.6bln pound ($3.43-$3.57bln) range.

Just Eat Takeaway shifts to a lower gear
Growth at Just Eat Takeaway slowed down considerably over the 4rth quarter. Nevertheless, the meal delivery company is gradually pedalling towards profit: the margin should only just be negative this year. Just Eat Takeaway received a 3rd more orders in 2021 and thus reached the 1bln mark: in total, the company received 1.1bln orders. These orders summed 28.1bln euros.

British retailer Marks & Spencer nudged up its profit outlook after it reported a strong Christmas performance, particularly in food, where it outperformed the market.
