Henk van der Meij, Hars & Hagebauer:

"The mango market suffered a blow, in week 1"

The current mango market is in an expectant mood. "It went well in December. There wasn't too much supply from Brazil. And Peru had gotten off to a sluggish start. That meant, until week 52, prices weren't fantastic, but generally reasonable," says Henk van der Meij of Hars & Hagebauer.

"That all changed in week 1. Some Peruvian exporters flooded the market with far too many inferior quality fruits. The market couldn't absorb that, and prices dropped to very questionable levels. Now in week 2, the situation seems to be stabilizing. Though, prices must rise. That's considering the increased cost of freight and cardboard, among other things."

"However, as always in the fruit and vegetable sector, one action is bound to provoke a reaction. The supply from Piura, Peru's early mango variety area, is already dwindling again. Who knows, the season might still be great. But, for the first two weeks of 2022, Peruvian mangoes have been nothing to write home about," concludes Henk.
