Georg Obermaier, wholesaler from Freiburg, offers Spanish oranges and fruit boxes:

"The quality of the oranges is excellent both in terms of juice, sugar content and taste"

In view of the compulsory testing and the measures taken, everyday working life in the catering industry is only picking up very slowly in some places. At least a new lockdown has been prevented so far. For wholesalers like Georg Obermaier (pictured right), managing director of the fruit and vegetable wholesaler of the same name in Freiburg, business is therefore also better than last year.

"The problem, however, is still the lack of personnel. A good customer of ours, with a large facility and beautiful decor, now only offers a lunch table because he lacks the staff to maintain the evening operation," says Obermaier. He also says that the spontaneity of the guests is no longer there as it was in the days before Corona.

Currently, the company offers organic oranges that are sourced from a plantation in Seville, Spain, without any intermediary trade. Obermaier receives 1-3 pallets of these per week, which are sold in 10 kg boxes to retailers and market stalls. "The quality is excellent. Both their juice and sugar content and the taste are top notch," says Obermaier. Prices have had to be raised only slightly.

Fruit box sales
The company supplies the entire range of catering establishments, such as large kitchens, canteens, and hospitals, as well as market stalls and corner stores in Freiburg and the surrounding area. For private and corporate customers, the company has also been offering fruit boxes for some time, with which good sales can be generated, at least to some extent. "All jobs could be maintained, which is also thanks to the sale of the fruit boxes. However, we can not yet live exclusively from this, because the additional expense for this is also simply too high and it does not yet pay off," Obermaier concludes.
