UK Dunnes Stores subsidiary sees losses double to £4.5mln
A UK subsidiary of Dunnes Stores recorded a loss of £4.5mln (€5.4mln) in 2020, according to accounts just filed, largely due to a hit to the value of certain properties on its books. Accounts for Dunnes Stores (UK) show that it recorded rental income from investment properties of £363,000 (€434,000) in the year to December 26th, 2020. This compared with income of £350,000 (€419,000) a year earlier.

Lidl GB sales up 2.6% over Christmas period
The British arm of German discount supermarket group Lidl said its sales rose 2.6% year-on-year in the 4 weeks to December 26 as it benefited from shoppers switching from other grocers. Lidl GB, owned by Germany's Schwarz group, said it gained 21mln pounds ($28.5mln) of sales in the period from customers swapping from other food retailers, citing data from market researcher Kantar. It said its sales were up 21% versus 2019, before the pandemic impacted trading.

Picnic almost doubled its turnover
In 2020, Picnic saw its turnover almost double, thanks in part to a strong expansion in Germany. However, the online supermarket is not yet profitable: losses amounted to tens of millions. In the year 2020, Picnic's revenues rose from 232mln euros to 455mln euros, an increase of 96%. In that year, the Dutch web supermarket was only active in its own country and in Germany. Sales in the Netherlands grew by 80% and in Germany by 252%. Last year, the online supermarket also took its 1st steps in France.

Swedish ICA stores - December sales figures
Sales in ICA stores increased by 0.7% in December 2021 compared with the corresponding month last year. Sales in like-for-like stores increased by 0.3% compared to last year. In December 2021, sales in ICA stores totalled SEK12,403mln excluding VAT, which is an increase of 0.7% compared with the same month in the previous year. Sales in January-December 2021 amounted to SEK132,083mln, an increase of 1.0% compared with the previous year.
