China: The average export price of garlic rose in November 2021

The export of garlic in November decreased significantly compared with the previous month. Affected by multiple factors such as rising sea freight, limited containers, tight shipping schedules, and international epidemics, the export of fresh or refrigerated garlic fell more significantly. The export volume of dried garlic has increased in recent months, and developed countries such as Europe and the United States are more enthusiastic about purchasing dried garlic.

1. The export volume of garlic dropped significantly from the previous month

China’s garlic exports are mainly primary products such as fresh and chilled garlic, dried garlic, brine garlic, garlic made or preserved with vinegar or acetic acid, and frozen garlic. The development of the deep processing of garlic is lagging behind. In November 2021, China's total export volume of cold storage and dried garlic was 181,800 tons, down 8.92% month-on-month and 26.82% year-on-year.

Specifically: According to customs data, in November 2021, the export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic was 159,122.40 tons, the cumulative export volume was 19.46659.62 tons, the export value was 174,670,600 U.S. dollars, the cumulative export value was 1,698,190,500 U.S. dollars, and the average export price was US$1,097.71/ton, the cumulative average export price was US$1,119.88/ton, the export volume fell 10.54% month-on-month and 27.38% year-on-year, and the cumulative export volume fell 14.90% compared to the same period last year.

2. Indonesia's imports have decreased

The world's garlic importing countries mainly include Indonesia, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, the United States, Bangladesh, Russia, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. The total imports of these nine countries account for more than half of the total global imports.

The importing countries of fresh or refrigerated garlic, in November 2021, are mainly Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Among them, Indonesia accounted for 39.83%, a month-on-month decrease of 8.08% in imports. Vietnam accounted for 11.34%, and its imports increased by 2.84% from the previous month. Malaysia accounted for 5.67%, a month-on-month decrease of 1.43% in imports. The severe international pandemic has reduced the purchasing willingness and demand of Southeast Asian countries.

3. The export share of Shandong Province has decreased

The main exporting provinces of China's fresh or frozen garlic are Shandong, Jiangsu and Henan. In November, the export share of cold-storage garlic in Shandong Province increased; the export share of Jiangsu Province and Henan Province decreased.

4. The average export price of garlic has risen

In November 2021, the average export price of fresh or refrigerated garlic was US$1,097.71/ton, a month-on-month increase of 4.97% and a year-on-year increase of 21.82%. Since May this year, the average export price of Chinese fresh or refrigerated garlic has been higher than the same period in 2020.
