France: the harvest of Menton lemons has begun

The harvest of Menton lemons began on December 13th in the orchards of Maison du Citron, a company run by Laurent and Adrien Gannac.

The harvest looks quite promising this year, thanks to ideal weather conditions. “The climate and the land here create a certain alchemy which gives us an exceptional lemon,” explains citrus producer Laurent Gannac who has about 800 trees. Depending on the year, the harvest can reach between 10 and 20 tons. “We have a telescopic arm to grab the fruits from the highest branches,” according to Lucas, an engineer who has been working at Maison du Citron for a year.

Benefiting from a PGI since 2015, the Menton lemons have been grown in the region for nearly 500 years.

“Of course, you have to really like lemons. They are a little acidic, but the skin is good, and the lemons that are big are mild, some are even sweet.”
