This weekend, Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb sent off the first waterway consignment of 40 tons of canned pineapples to Hamburg in Germany from the industrial growth centre at Kumarghat in Unokoti district.
The minister underlined that the growing demand for proper management has ensured fair prices to the farmers and also, the state government has been facilitating a scheme to develop a forward market linkage. As a result, pineapples which did not even fetch Rs 2 apiece (€0.02) in the local market, are now getting a stable price of not less than Rs 15-20 apiece (€0.18-0.24), Deb pointed out.
Besides producing world class sweet Queen pineapples in summer, the northern part of Tripura is famous for large size Kew variety pineapple. But although high yielding, local consumption is not sufficient. The state government for the last three years developed an export chain of raw pineapples to the Middle East and Europe.
