The floods in southwestern France have reached peaks of 5.52 meters in some places, like in Peyrehorade (Landes). The affected producers are reporting on the damage.
For Rémi Fortassier, kiwi producer in Orthevielle, the toll is heavy. “My kiwis are all under water, I’ve never seen anything like this. It is the third flood in four years, this didn’t use to happen.” From his 7 hectares of green kiwis, Rémi has lost 5.5 since early 2021.
One flood too many. “It is another hit to the kiwi fruit coffin,” explains Rémi Fortassier, who is even thinking of putting an end to this not so profitable business. Kiwis represent 50% of his revenue.
“Five years ago, we were delivering 220 tons. This year, we delivered between 20 and 17 tons, which is very little. We are working at a loss. It is a pivotal year to see if our new plans will pick up. But if it doesn’t work, we will not be able to continue. We will see in the spring.”
