In 2021, 13.3 percent more potatoes were harvested in NRW than the year before

North Rhine-Westphalian farmers harvested 1.92 million metric tons of potatoes this year, 13.3 percent more than in 2020. According to Information und Technik, the state's statistical office, based on the final results of the "Special Harvest and Quality Assessment," the yield per hectare was 51.6 metric tons, 11.9 percent higher than last year. The area under potatoes this year was 1.3 percent larger than last year, at 37,200 hectares.

Despite the exceptionally cold spring and wet and changeable weather during this year's growing season, late summer provided good yield growth. Statisticians further reported that the amount of potatoes harvested this year exceeded the average 2015-2020 crop by 22.1 percent. The area harvested was 10.0 percent higher and the area planted to potatoes was 10.9 percent higher than the average of the last six years.
