Mango, papaya, watermelon, banana, pineapple and pitaya, these various fresh fruits are bundled together, decorated beautifully and attractively, and there are several tables full of them. This is a special fruit buffet held in Lopburi, Thailand not long ago. The main guests at this feast are not humans, but thousands of local monkeys.
"Monkey Buffet Festival"
On that day, a full 2 tons of fruit worth 100,000 baht was finished of by the monkeys. This fruit buffet is actually the annual "Monkey Buffet Festival" in Lopburi. Lopburi hosts a buffet festival on the last weekend of November every year. Thousands of local monkeys are rewarded with fruits, vegetables, or desserts and drinks. This year is the 33rd (it was closed last year due to the epidemic).
Today, the "Monkey Buffet Festival" has become an iconic local festival. According to estimates by the local tourism department, this year's buffet festival has brought tens of millions of baht in tourism revenue to the local area.
The "Monkey Buffet Festival" has a different theme every year. This year's theme is "Monkey in a Wheelchair". The organizers used part of the activity income to purchase 100 wheelchairs and gave them to the disabled in Thailand.
The Director of the Lopburi Branch of the National Tourism Administration of Thailand said that the "Monkey Buffet Festival" has been developed, not only an entertainment activity to watch monkeys gather to eat and drink, but also has a public welfare benefit, which makes it more meaningful. "Lopburi and all of Thailand have a large number of monkeys living with humans. We must treat them well and thank them for their help in the tourism industry."
