Mexican garlic production area decreases in San Juan Del Rio

The garlic acreage in San Juan del Río has decreased again this year. The president of the Local Plant Health Committee, Francisco Sinecio Barron, said that there were 40 hectares devoted to garlic production in the community of La Valla in 2019, a number that fell to nearly 35 hectares in 2021, and to only about 25 so far this new season.

This activity has been in decline mainly because producers aren't achieving good prices for their production, as they are paid 10 to 15 thousand pesos per ton, while the Chinese imported garlic is paid at triple those prices.

"The quality of the garlic produced in San Juan del Río is better than the imported product because the land of San Juan has a large amount of water and nutrients necessary to generate a good product, while the garlic from China has a doubtful quality," stated Francisco Sinecio.
