Van der Peet develops custom solution for transporting potato crates

Helma Kartoffelvertrieb in Sittensen, Germany, asked Van der Peet to come up with a specially designed trailer for transporting potato crates.

Helma Kartoffelvertrieb packs potatoes for the retail sector. Immediately after harvesting, the potatoes are transported to the location, where they are packed. Helma Kartoffelvertrieb uses a variety of equipment, including twenty Van der Peet belt trailers, for this purpose. Some of the potatoes are loaded into crates in the field. These crates must also be transported to the packing location.

A nice challenge for Van der Peet’s design team. A key Helma Kartoffelvertrieb requirement was to be able to quickly load and unload the crates, because the potato harvest is relentless and packers do not want to be sitting idle either.

In response, Van der Peet developed a trailer that can accommodate five 259 x 240-centimetre crates. Naturally, the transport must be safe, so it is important for the crates to be securely held in place during transport. Van der Peet developed a custom solution for this as well.

The crates are placed between two 25-centimetre-high strips with a forklift truck. This effectively secures the crates in a lateral direction. To create room for the forklift tines, the strips are interrupted in a number of places. As a result, the crates are always positioned in the same place. Van der Peet then installed hinged security strips into the floor to secure the crates. The driver can control these security strips from a single central location. This enables the driver to load the trailer and secure the crates super-fast. The crates can be loaded from either side of the trailer.

The last two custom solutions added by Van der Peet were as follows:

  • installation of extra-wide tyres with a heavy profile (560 x 60, R22.5) to give the trailer a solid grip in the field without causing any driving damage;
  • installation of a TwistLox for a 40-foot sea container, thus enabling Helma Kartoffelvertrieb to make use of the trailer on a broader front.
