Andrej Surikov (Cash & Carry store VLG Trier) on the current situation

"Opening up for private buyers would not be viable solution"

With two locations in Saarbrücken and Trier, VLG is one of the most important bulk suppliers for regional restaurants and bulk consumers. "For us, December would normally have been one of the best months in terms of sales, but the 2G regulation has thrown a spanner in the works," says Andrej Surikov, the company's site manager in Trier.

About 80% of sales are attributable to the food service industry, he says, with the remainder coming from other wholesale customers. "Among the perennial favorites are the usual items such as tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, salads and berries, but precisely also ready-to-cook or semi-finished products from our own production, from pre-cut vegetables to ready-made salads and vegetable broth. This assortment is continuously developed in parallel with the concise labor shortage in the catering industry," Surikov continued.

Andrej Surikov is a salesman at the Trier location. In the C&C store as well as in the delivery service, the company's convenience items are on offer.

Christmas sales no longer promising
The raw materials are preferably sourced from the region. At the moment, the majority comes mainly from abroad, in line with the season. Surikov: "There are enough goods available, so I don't see any problems at all at the moment. On the marketing side, the stricter measures - i.e. the 2G regulations - are causing us problems. Many Christmas parties have been cancelled, and only a few Christmas markets are taking place, in a more limited formats. Accordingly, December looks rather bad, and the same goes for January and February. I would like to see the catering trade pick up again from March onwards," says the supplier.

Alternative sales channels
With the ongoing problems, VLG has also been looking for new sales channels, he said. "Between the two lockdowns in 2020 as well as last year, we were able to achieve a nice turnover. At those times, regional gastronomy was even booming in some cases. Due to the lockdowns, we opened our pick-up market for everyone. However, due to the lower purchase volumes and general buying behavior, opening up for private buyers would not be a viable solution."
