Unseasonal rain hits Belagavi grape growers, government to compensate farmers

Belagavi growers have started dumping their grape crops as unseasonal rains have caused heavy damage to the grapes. In Belagavi, over 4,500 hectares of grapes were cultivated in Athani, Kagawad, Gokak and other areas. Untimely rains have led to large losses for growers, who already suffered financially in 2020 because of the lockdowns.

Belagavi deputy director Mahantesh Murgod: "We have started the inspection and we covered 3,278 hectares.  … We are sending all the crop damage details to the government."

The low yield has also triggered high prices in retail markets.
