Consumer surprised by delicious taste of melons in winter

The Greenery and Bayer Vegetable Seeds highlighted the delicious taste of melons last weekend. Reason: consumers are not always aware that delicious melons are available during the winter months.

The consumption of Galia and Cantaloupe melon in winter is a fraction compared to the summer months. This is not strange, because melons are often a symbol of summer sweetness. In addition, in the past, there was space for improvement in the consistency in taste, firmness and presentation. But this has now been greatly improved.

Nico van Vliet, Global Value Chain Development Lead at Bayer Vegetable Seeds: "The development of good varieties and the crop cultivation has been improved a lot in recent years. Together with our overseas colleagues, we have ensured that delicious tasting melons are available in the winter months. The focus is on our Long Shelf Life varieties Citrino (SVMG4974) , SVMG5224, McLaren, DRG3228 and Cantaloupe variety SV1044MF. These varieties have a brix of 12-15 or higher, a good balance between bite and juiciness, a very good shelf life and an excellent uniform presentation in color and grading. In addition, they are diligently grown in Brazil by growers like Agricola Famosa and Brazil Melon. "

Frank Ocampo of The Greenery/HagĂ© International sees plenty of opportunities for the winter season: "In recent years, we have seen an increasing trend among consumers towards good-tasting products. Especially in the winter months, this creates space for tasty melons. Together with our growers in Brazil, we ensure a continuous supply of melons. We are ready to provide more consumers with deliciously sweet Galia and Cantaloupe melons! During the day, I connected, via livestream online meetings, with the Brazilian growers to show the dynamics and the opportunities”!

This is the moment to bring melons to the attention of consumers during winter season. The Greenery and Bayer therefore jointly initiated an out-store and instore promotion at the Jumbo Foodmarkt Breda on Friday 26 November. During the market survey, it was clear that the consumer was surprised by the delicious taste of the melons. But also, that they are now willing to significantly buy melons by delivering these traits.

Also it was surprising to hear that consumers would like to buy melons in winter by continue availability at the store. To summarize; it was good to experience that there is space for extra Galia and Cantaloupe consumption in winter , if the whole season the high quality and taste is available in the supermarket.
