Canada: Ministers want progress in December, concrete elements of a grocery code by March
10 leaders representing a cross section of Canada’s grocery industry continue meeting weekly to hammer out a Code of Conduct for the industry, though Ottawa is not expecting “concrete elements of a proposal” until March. The negotiation of a Code of Conduct was back in the news recently after the working group of federal, provincial and territorial agriculture ministers (FPT) focused on reforming the industry, released a statement saying it only needed an update in December as opposed to a finished proposal.

Sitting out the season: A record number of Americans say they won’t be buying holiday gifts this year
Predictions for holiday retail sales are rosy, with the National Retail Federation calling for record gains of 8.5% to 10.5% from year-ago levels. But a record-high amount of people, or 11.5% of Americans, aren’t buying any gifts this holiday season, according to a survey by Deloitte. Wealthy consumers are planning to spend more, which will mask the fact that many others are sitting out the season. Higher-income households in the U.S. plan to spend five-times that of lower-income households this holiday season, said Deloitte.

Spending at Japan's shops rises in October as economy reopens, outlook murky
Sales at Japan's supermarket and department stores rose in October as the end to coronavirus curbs lifted consumption, industry data showed, but the modest rebound suggested a full recovery will take time. Sales at chain stores, which include supermarkets such as Aeon and furniture stores such as Nitori Holdings, grew 3.7% in October from a year earlier, data from the Japan Chain Stores Association showed.

Croatian retailer NTL to test ScanShop application
Croatian supermarket chain Narodni Trgovački Lanac (NTL) will test a new application - ScanShop - that simplifies shopping experience of customers, according to media reports. Developed by Croatian start-up ITalk, ScanShop allows customers to independently scan desired items in the store via their own mobile phone and thus skip the queues for the cash register, according to daily Poslovni Dnevnik.

Amazon opens 8th Fresh store
Amid speculation that Amazon is planning to significantly accelerate the rollout of its Fresh grocery stores in the UK, the online giant has opened its 8th site on Chancery Lane in Holborn, London. The hi-tech ‘just walk out’ store is located close to Tesco’s new GetGo checkout-free Express store. Australian retail sales surge in October as economy revives
Australian retail sales rebounded with a bang in October as the lifting of many stay-at-home restrictions unleashed a wave of pent-up shopping, further evidence the economy is recovering rapidly from a pandemic-induced slump. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed retail sales jumped 4.9% in October to A$31.1bln ($22.31bln), extending September's already strong 1.7% bounce.

Greece: Grocery shopping goes online
8 in every 9 Greeks (89%) say they have ordered groceries online, with 74% considering it a time-saver and 57% planning to purchase food for Christmas this way, according to a survey conducted in mid-September on behalf of PayPal by Maru/Matchbox. Some 2 in every 5 Greeks (40%) say they use PayPal.

Italy: Carrefour confirms shuttering of stores
Carrefour Italia has confirmed to unions that it is to close 106 directly-owned stores, comprising 82 Carrefour Express and 24 Carrefour Market stores, according to media reports. The retailer has also formalised the procedure that will see around 769 redundancies across 9 regions of Italy as part of its 2022 Business Plan. The most affected regions will be Lombardy, with 300 redundancies and Lazio with around 100. According to daily Corriere della Sera, Carrefour Italia took the decision after a decline in turnover and customers and increasing labour costs. The retailer stressed that the changes will enable it to breakeven in 2022.

Aldi France achieves 'milestone' in terms of Leader Price integration
Aldi France has announced the integration of the 500th former Leader Price store into its portfolio, 1 year on from its acquisition of the former Casino Group-owned chain. The discounter's distribution network has been expanded to more than 1,300 stores with the integration of the outlets, while some 5,000 employees have been integrated into its workforce.
