Melissa Gea, sales manager at Grand Etal Bio

“In addition to limiting waste, this solution allows everyone to eat organic”

Producer, importer and marketer of 100% organic products, Grand Etal Bio, joins the fight against food waste to stop throwing away products that no longer meet certain marketing criteria.

Each year, nearly 10 million tons of food are thrown away, 42% of which are fruit and vegetables. More and more professionals are therefore committing themselves to the fight against food waste. It is the case of Grand Etal Bio which is joining Too Good To Go, a Danish phone application that connects its users with food professionals that propose to them baskets of unsold products at a reduced price.

Fruit and vegetables that “do not meet the standards”
Holes, spots, sizes...the fruit and vegetables that do not meet certain marketing criteria are discarded. “Today, most professionals want quality to the detriment of certain fruit and vegetables that only present some minor defects and are therefore still healthy and good for consumption,” explains Mélissa Gea.

Using this anti-waste company also helps Grand Etal Bio to sell the merchandise from other producers in addition to its own. “We made about 30 baskets in two weeks. We just choose a time slot and people come to pick up the baskets themselves.”

Organic food for all
Due to a lack of means, many consumers do not have access to the organic market. “This solution allows everyone to eat organic, and it is another one of our goals, as an organic producer. Last week, a father came to pick up a basket, delighted to be able to feed organic fruit and vegetables to his four children, which he normally cannot afford.”

Positive feedback
Besides the purely economic considerations, consumers are also increasingly more sensitive to the initiatives set up by professionals to fight against food waste. “Since we started making these baskets, we’ve only been receiving positive feedback. People love them and congratulate us.”
